I love to teach, whether in private lessons, group workshops, master classes, or ensemble coaching. From dealing with specific issues particular to the bass and its roles in various musical realms, to larger concepts on feel, improvisation, composition, group interaction and development, and just music in general, I relish the the opportunity to share with the next generation of musicians some of the ideas and concepts I’ve learned and developed over the years. Both in and around NYC and on the road at various conservatories and universities, it’s been enormously gratifying to make teaching a greater part of my mission, and a blessing to discover that what I have to offer can be illuminating and inspiring to others. Do get in touch if you’d like details on what I might bring to your program or to you as an individual.

I’m happy to work with individuals and groups remotely via Zoom. Please reach out via email to discuss, or just purchase lessons here from my store.

"Stephan Crump gave a wonderful performance at the ISB New Music Summit this past June. He played beautifully and was able to clearly explain in an open and inviting way his personal approach about improvisation and composition. He is an eminently musical man and great communicator. Highly recommended.”

Mark Dresser Professor of Music, University of California, San Diego

“Stephan held a eye-opening masterclass, delving into almost all areas of playing the bass. Dealing with anything from his rhythmical concept and perception, to the the sheer physical aspect of connecting to your instrument and being an instrumentalist, he gave our students both a truly revelatory experience as well as a very concrete set of ideas and areas to work on as a bass player and musician.”

Ole Morten Vågan Professor of Jazz and Improvised Music, Norwegian Academy of Music

"Stephan's visit brought significant lasting dividends to our jazz performance program. His contagious enthusiasm immediately spoke to our students. Stephan's teaching draws from a unique ability to help students understand why music matters to them and how music is integrated within other aspects of their lives. Stephan's broad musical interests--from cutting edge jazz and improvised music, to the great American songwriting tradition--are key to his successful teaching approach. After several days of one-on-one and group interactions with students, Stephan then performed with his Rosetta Trio. What a treat! Students saw proof in action - Stephan is a musician and teacher of the highest order."

Jason Robinson Professor of Jazz and Popular Music, Amherst College

“I’ve been hearing from faculty and students all week about how blown away they were by you guys.  One of my faculty colleagues brought his son, an aspiring musician, to the concert, and they ended up having a conversation until late into the evening trying to figure out just how you guys managed to do what you do—how you manage, in particular, the balance between structure and freedom in your performances.  I want to emphasize again how cool your trio is on a conceptual level.  I think I’m going to try to fold one or two of your tunes into my jazz history class, specifically for the vision you offer of where jazz might go in its second century.”

Matthew Butterfield Associate Professor of Music, Franklin & Marshall College

“Stephan Crump’s Rosetta Trio brought a level of emotional content and rhythmic sophistication to our campus that will resonate with students for a long time to come. Beyond their amazing performance, each musician clearly articulated his artistic processes to the students in a way that both challenged and inspired them. Highly recommended.”

Chris Merz Professor of Jazz Studies, University of Northern Iowa
